Infineon expands solid-state isolator portfolio for high-volume industrial automation

Infineon has introduced the compact ISSI20BxxF Solid State Isolator family, extending the use of solid-state isolation into high-volume industrial automation applications by offering a space-efficient alternative to photovoltaic and electromechanical relays with higher drive capability and integrated protection features.


Infineon Technologies has expanded its Solid State Isolator (SSI) portfolio with the introduction of the ISSI20BxxF family, enabling designers to replace conventional photovoltaic isolators (PVIs), photovoltaic relays (PVRs) and electromechanical relays (EMRs) in high-volume industrial automation applications.

Packaged in a compact PG-DSO-8 150 mil footprint comparable to existing PVI devices, the new family provides a straightforward migration path to solid-state isolation technology for space-constrained designs. The devices offer higher output drive capability, integrated protection features and greater flexibility in the choice of external power switches.

Target applications include solid-state relay modules, PLC input/output systems, industrial automation equipment, laboratory DC power supplies, automated test equipment, low-voltage building automation and telecom infrastructure.

The ISSI20BxxF family is based on Infineon's proprietary coreless-transformer technology, which transfers both signal and energy across the isolation barrier to drive external power switches without requiring a dedicated isolated gate supply. Compared with conventional PVI-based solutions, the approach delivers greater output drive capability and supports a wider range of external power switches.

Integrated protection features include over-current protection, over-temperature protection, fast fault turn-off and latch-off capability, reducing the need for external protection circuitry while improving overall system robustness. Selected variants also incorporate dynamic Miller clamp and fast turn-on functionality for applications with more demanding switching requirements.

The family comprises three devices — ISSI20B02F, ISSI20B03F and ISSI20B11F — all housed in the PG-DSO-8 150 mil package. Each device provides 3 kVrms isolation, 4 mm creepage and UL 1577 certification, making them suitable for applications requiring basic isolation under applicable safety standards.

The new products complement Infineon's previously introduced ISSI20RxxH and ISSI30RxxH families, extending the company's SSI portfolio to applications where a smaller package is required.

Compared with electromechanical relays, SSI-based solid-state relays eliminate mechanical wear, contact bounce and arcing, enabling silent operation, longer service life and improved reliability in high-cycle industrial applications.
